Um executivo de repente desempregado sofre um colapso nervoso. A história de Mel e Edna (Jack Lemmon e Anne Bancroft), um casal de classe média, meia-idade e meio-feliz que mora em um prédio de apartamentos em Manhattan. Mel perde o emprego, o apartamento é assaltado, Edna consegue um emprego, Mel perde a cabeça, Edna perde o emprego... para não falar das pequenas atribulações com os vizinhos intrometidos, os parentes úteis e as tarifas exatas dos ônibus. O casal sofre indignidade após indignidade (algunas se autoinfligem) e, quando parecem à beira da rendição, eles fazem uma careta desafiadora e cavam as trincheiras para a batalha.
