Pirola (Mazzaropi) é um pobre caboclo que vive na fazenda do patrão, o Coronel Januário (Jofre Soares), morando num casebre com o filho Zé (José Mauro Ferreira). Um dia, Pirola recebe surpreso a visita de um velhinho amigo, que, sentindo-se na hora da morte, leva-lhe de presente um saco cheio de dinheiro. Ingênuo e transtornado, Pirola não sabe o que fazer e acaba confiando a fortuna ao patrão. Januário, que secretamente está às portas da falência, finge ser um pai de santo para tentar apropriar-se do dinheiro do pobre Pirola.
