Na Alemanha nazista, no período que antecedeu a guerra, Max (Clive Owen), um gay, é enviado para o campo de concentração de Dachau. Ele tenta esconder sua homossexualidade usando uma estrela amarela, que era a forma de identificar judeus, em vez do triângulo rosa usado para "marcar" os homossexuais. No campo se apaixona por Horst (Lothaire Blutheau), um prisioneiro homossexual que usa com orgulho seu triângulo rosa.
