Edgard trabalha como subalterno na empresa do milionário Werneck e é apaixonado por Ritinha, uma mulher simples que trabalha como professora para sustentar a mãe e suas três irmãs. Um dia Peixoto, genro e funcionário de Werneck, lhe faz uma proposta para que se case com Maria Cecília, filha do patrão. O motivo é que Maria Cecília foi abusada e agora está sendo obrigada a se casar pela família. Edgard hesita, mas aceita a proposta. A partir de então ele entra em uma grande dúvida: deve depositar o cheque e se casar com Maria Cecília ou ficar com Ritinha, seu grande amor?
