Da obra de Antonio Callado, o filme narra a história do Padre Nando, que, na década de 1950, saindo de um isolado mosteiro de Recife, começa a trabalhar como missionário no Alto Xingu. Envolvido em tramas políticas e sofrendo com os desejos sexuais, ele deixa a igreja, vira indigenista e mais tarde, já nos anos de 1960, passa a lutar contra o regime militar implantado em 1964.
