Algernon Moncrieff fica surpreso ao descobrir que seu afluente amigo - que ele conhece como "Ernest" - na verdade se chama Jack Worthing. Jack criou seu alter ego para escapar de suas obrigações em sua propriedade rural, onde tem sob seus cuidados Cecily Cardew. Cecily acredita que o desconhecido Ernest é um irmão caprichoso de Jack e está interessada em seu estilo de vida libertino. Algernon, vendo uma oportunidade, assume a identidade de Ernest e sorrateiramente começa a cortejar Cecily.
