Nos seus 30 anos, Dex, inchado pela cerveja, se tornou um homem feio. Ele é muito erudito em filosofia, estudou Steve McQueen - o protótipo ideal do herói americano, ele é perito em budismo e taoísmo e segue as três leis que fazem dele um sucesso com as mulheres: não expressar desejo, fazer algo heroico na frente dela, em seguida, recuar. Tem um trabalho temporário com crianças e, em outras partes do dia fica na cerveja e com os amigos jogando Frisbee, ou na piscina, ou jogando pôquer, ou com seu cão Astro, ou fazendo sexo. O que poderia estar faltando? Então, em sua reunião de dez anos da faculdade, Dex encontra Syd, e o "Tao de Steve" não pode ser bastante para começar o que quer. Além disso, Syd se lembra de algo importante que Dex esqueceu. Pode um indivíduo esperto, com excesso de peso, encontrar a felicidade?
