Finbar McBride (Peter Dinklage) anseia por uma vida tranquila e reservada. No entanto, medindo um pouco mais de um metro, fica praticamente impossível para ele se misturar na multidão. Nascido com nanismo, Finbar escolhe então uma rotina de reclusão para fugir da atenção em demasia que sua pequena estatura provoca. Ele passa a maior parte do tempo cuidando de sua maior paixão: os trens. Após uma série de eventos, Finbar se muda para uma estação de trem abandonada, onde espera ter a paz que tanto deseja. Mas ele logo se envolve, involuntariamente, com uma artista que acabou de sofrer uma terrível tragédia pessoal e com um vendedor cubano de cachorro-quente excessivamente amigável.
