Baseado na grande obra de Orson Welles "Soberba" Final do século XIX, Isabel Amberson desiste de casar com Eugene, a grande prisão de sua vida por causa de preconceitos aristocráticos, e acaba se tornando esposa de Wilbur Minnafer. Anos depois, Eugene, que se tornou um grande homem de negócios, regressa à cidade com sua filha Lucy. Após a morte de Wilbur, o amor entre Eugene e Isabel reacende, mas seu arrogante filho, George, faz de tudo para acabar com o romance, inclusive sabotando seu próprio relacionamento. Relutante em acompanhar as mudanças do mundo industrializado, ele acaba perdendo todo o império deixado por seu pai, e acaba encontrando a redenção através do trabalho e da humildade, bem como o perdão de seu verdadeiro amor.
