Matt Whitlock (Denzel Washington) é o honesto delegado de uma pequena cidade da Flórida, que se vê em apuros após usar dinheiro do tráfico de drogas para pagar o caro tratamento médico de sua amante, Ann Marai (Sanaa Lathan), que está doente. Porém um incêndio criminoso mata Ann e seu marido, colocando Matt como principal suspeito do crime. A responsável pela investigação do caso é Alex Diaz (Eva Mendes), ex-esposa de Matt, que passa a desconfiar cada vez mais dele a cada nova pista descoberta. Com a investigação em andamento, Matt precisa correr contra o tempo para descobrir o autor dos assassinatos, antes que ele próprio vá parar na cadeia.
