O filme conta a história do detetive de narcótico Eugene "Mack" McCanick que é pego em uma tempestade de paranoia e violência ao saber que o criminoso Weeks, aparentemente inofensivo, foi libertado da prisão. Ao longo de um dia quente, Mack e seu parceiro Floyd impiedosamente caçam o criminoso, que guarda um segredo do passado de Mack. A verdade é revelada após um final explosivo, uma sequência de perseguição urbana que culmina em um confronto surpreendentemente emocional e não apenas entre McCanick e Weeks, mas também entre McCanick e a si mesmo.
