Ocean City, Maryland, 1969. Gussie Sawyer (Sissy Spacek), uma garçonete, ama muito Henry Squires (Kevin Kline), que trabalha no jornal local, cujo dono é seu pai. Ele também é apaixonado por Gussie. Eles pretendem fugir juntos e ela já conseguiu um emprego como aeromoça, mas na hora de partir apenas ela foi. Dezesseis anos depois, Gussie se tornou um fotógrafa mundialmente respeitada e vai passar férias em Ocean City, para rever seus pais. Lá reencontra Henry, que herdou o jornal e agora está casado com Ruth (Bonnie Bedelia) e tem um filho, Addy (Jim Standiford). Isto não impede que ele se envolva com Gussie. A vontade de partir com ela é muito forte, mas ele terá que decidir logo, pois Gussie irá para Paris em breve.
