Izzy (Robin Tunney) é uma fotografa jovem e lutadora. Peter (Joel Edgerton) é um professor assistente em uma universidade em Los Angeles. Com um relacionamento recente, loucamente apaixonados, eles vêem seu mundo acolhedor sendo destruído por um ato de violência. Seus respectivos pais, Arlene (Cybill Shepherd) e o pai de Peter, Eddie (Scott Wilson), vão levando seus caminhos através da vida de seus filhos. E logo se torna claro que perdas irrevogáveis tem tocado não só a Izzy e Peter, mas todo seu ciclo de relacionamentos. Emoções escondidas vêm a tona, enquanto o trauma se torna um teste complexo entre o relacionamento de Izzy e Peter. Será que eles sobreviverão a esse terrível ato de violência?
