Richard Pryor interpreta três papéis diferentes. O primeiro é um catador de laranja pobre chamado Leroy Jones, que é demitido quando, por engano, ele se junta ao sindicato dos trabalhadores rurais durante uma de suas manifestações. Depois disso, ele é forçado a deixar sua esposa e família para trás, que inclui o pai de Leroy (também interpretado por Pryor), para ir para Los Angeles. Acidentalmente, Leroy acaba trabalhando para a mesma empresa que lhe demitiu. Ele agora é um gerente da empresa, mas está distante de seus antigos amigos. Ele conhece e se apaixona por Vanetta (Lonette McKee), uma sindicalista, que absorve o seu tempo, obrigando-o a se desdobrar para atender a esposa Annie Mae (Margaret Avery) e a amante Vanetta. Quando Leroy descobre que o reverendo Thomas Lenox (também interpretado por Pryor) engravida sua esposa enquanto ele estava ausente, tenta se vingar buscando conquistar a esposa do reverendo.
