Severino do Quixadá (Renato Aragão), um pastor de cabras, salva Capitão (Nélson Xavier) e seu bando de cangaceiros de uma emboscada do tenente Bezerra. Na confusão, os amigos Mussum e Zacarias fogem da cadeia e todos se encontram no esconderijo dos cangaceiros, onde Gavião (Dedé Santana) é homem de confiança do chefe. Observando sua semelhança com Severino, Capitão lhe dá uma missão, que acaba revelando-se uma emboscada. Com a ajuda de Aninha (Regina Duarte), sobrinha do prefeito, conseguem fugir e, no caminho, encontram uma misteriosa bruxa-fada (Bruna Lombardi).
