O major Tommy Egan (Ethan Hawke) é um oficial da Força Aérea americana encarregado de dirigir ataques aéreos na guerra no Afeganistão. Após pilotar drones de controle remoto contra os talibãs por 8 horas, todos os dias, ele volta para sua casaem Las Vegas, onde vive com sua esposa (January Jones) e filhos. Mas, a cada nova missão, sua moral fica mais conturbada. Tommy começa a se desligar da vida real, vendo sua rotina familiar cair aos pedaços enquanto o caos da guerra só cresce cada vez mais.
