Pete Carlton (Marc Donato), de 10 anos, tem um câncer fatal no cérebro e só pode se locomover em cadeira de rodas. O que ele mais ama é observar a vida de pequenos insetos. Seu sonho é capturar a lendária borboleta azul, só encontrada nas florestas das Américas Central e do Sul. Teresa (Pascale Bussières), mãe de Pete, faz de tudo para que o filho realize seu desejo. Ela convence Alan Osborne (William Hurt), um notório entomologista, a realizar com o menino a viagem à floresta. Juntos, os dois seguem em busca do mítico inseto.
