Hassan (Ayad Akhtar) é um paquistanês que estuda engenharia em Paris. Um dia ele é preso pelo serviço de inteligência local, acusado de praticar atos terroristas. Preso e torturado enquanto esteve preso, ao sair Hassan decide participar de uma missão terrorista. Ele entra sorrateiramente nos Estados Unidos, onde se une a uma célula terrorista situada em Nova York. Na manhã do ataque todos os integrantes da célula são presos, com exceção de Hassan e Khalid (Charles Daniel Sandoval), o líder do grupo. Hassan consegue refúgio junto a Sayeed (Firdous Bamji), um amigo de infância que não suspeita de nada e que vive com a família em Nova Jersey. A cada dia que passa Hassan se vê mais dividido entre suas crenças e o sentimento que nutre por Sayeed e sua família.
