Brocas radioativas do Exército Britânico em uma remota base escocesa atraem uma entidade subterrânea radioativa, de natureza desconhecida, que desaparece deixando dois soldados gravemente queimados pela radiação... e um profundo buraco na terra. Outras pessoas que encontraram com a "coisa" durante a noite sofrem da mesma forma, e com o aumento da gravidade; parece que a criatura é capaz de "absorver" radiação de qualquer fonte, crescendo mais e mais.
