Aparício, depois de uma semana de casamento com Emengarda, vem da Paraíba para prestar serviço militar no 2o. Regimento de Infantaria, no Rio de Janeiro. A esposa fica sob a guarda do pai e na companhia do irmão, Chiquinho. Com a morte do pai, Emengarda resolve vir ao Rio com Chiquinho. Aparício fica preocupado, pois o seu soldo como recruta não daria para pagar uma pensão para a mulher e o cunhado. A solução foi escondê-los num depósito nos fundos do quartel.
