Narra a história de Sonny Phillips, rapaz que retorna para casa depois de servir no exército. Sua mãe é uma ex-prostituta que hoje agencia Carol, uma garota jovem e bonita. Antes de sair de casa, Sonny ganhava a vida como “garoto de programa”, cujos encontros eram arranjados pela mãe. Sonny vive em eterno conflito. Não consegue um emprego regular, mas também não quer voltar a satisfazer por dinheiro mulheres ricas e casadas, infelizes com seus maridos. Ele e Carol estão apaixonados, mas atormentados, não querem assumir o relacionamento.
