Ilha Pitkeys, costa da Irlanda. Neste lugar remoto onde não há telefone e apenas uma lancha é a única ligação com o continente, o cientista Lawrence Phillips Peter Forbes-Robertson) se isolou com sua equipe, em uma tentativa de achar a cura do câncer. Pouco depois Ian Bellows (Liam Gaffney), um morador da ilha, é dado como desaparecido. O policial John Harris (Sam Kydd) vai procurá-lo e o encontra morto e sem os ossos. Harry comunica o acontecido a Reginald Landers (Eddie Byrne), um pesquisador, que fica totalmente espantado com o caso. Landers pega a lancha, deixando os moradores da ilha isolados, e vai ao continente falar com um eminente patologista, Brian Stanley (Peter Cushing), que também fica muito surpreso e diz que o maior entendido em ossos era David West (Edward Judd).
