Após o desaparecimento de milhões de pessoas, o mundo desesperado recorre ao presidente das Nações Unidas, Nicolae Carpathia. Colocado em um pedestal, idolatrado e ganhando a confiança dos que foram deixados para trás, ele se sente o dono do mundo com o planeta aos seus pés. Mas a milhares de quilômetros dali, um grupo sabe qual é a verdadeira e sinistra identidade do governante. Auto-intitulando-se "Comando Tribulação", o grupo tenta desesperadamente compartilhar o que sabe com quem estiver disposto a escutá-lo, mesmo colocando em risco as sua próprias vidas. Embarcam nessa perigosa missão, tentando abrir os olhos do mundo para a verdade, o jornalista Buck Williams, o Pastor Bruce Barnes, o piloto Rayford Steele e sua filha Chloe.
