O filme é baseado na novela homônima de Norman MacLean e narra a verdadeira história de dois jovens Norman e Paul que cresceram pescando trutas em Montana. A família vive várias aventuras, os irmãos seguem cada um seu caminho, mas alguma coisa os faz retornar sempre à pescaria. Afinal, o rio parece ter algo a dizer aos MacLean.
