Numa noite de sábado Lucy Harbin (Joan Crawford), que estava viajando, volta antes do previsto e vê que Frank Harbin (Lee Majors), seu marido, tinha sido infiel. Desta forma ela mata o marido e sua amante, Stella Fulton (Patricia Crest), com violentos golpes de machado. Lucy não é condenada, pois foi considerada legalmente louca. Após passar 20 anos num sanatório, Lucy é libertada e volta para casa para tentar reatar os laços com Carol Harbin (Diane Baker), a filha que na época era uma garotinha. Carol testemunhou os crimes e foi criada pelos tios, Bill Cutler (Leif Erickson) e Emily Cutler (Rochelle Hudson), tornando-se uma escultora ao crescer. Ela pensa em se casar com Michael Fields (John Anthony Hayes), que pertence a uma rica família e que não se importa que a mãe de Carol seja uma assassina. Ao voltar para casa Lucy acha tudo muito estranho, inclusive Carol, que durante toda a internação foi proibida de visitá-la.
