Nick Mullen (Gabriel Byrne) e Vernon Bayliss (Denholm Elliot) são repórteres que receberão um bilhete anônimo sobre um escândalo político que está prestes a ruir. MP Dennis Markham (Ian Bannen), um amigo de Vernon, é fotografado deixando uma prostituta num flat e, duas horas mais tarde, é fotografado indo para uma armada da Alemanha Oriental. Provas do envolvimento da KGB são muito circunstanciais. No entanto, a história corre e um tornado de publicidade atinge a família de Markham. Embora Nick estivesse envolvido em assuntos de Markham, Vernon está interessado em um ângulo diferente. Quando Vernon morre subitamente, Nick começa a perceber que a história é muito mais profunda do que se imaginava e que Vernon sabia muito.
