O ano é 1795. Jane Austen (Anne Hathaway) tem 20 anos e começa a se destacar como uma escritora. Enquanto ela está mais interessada em desvendar o mundo, seus pais querem que ela logo se case com um homem rico, que possa assegurar seu status perante a sociedade. O principal candidato é o sr. Wisley (Laurence Fox), neto da aristocrata Lady Gresham (Maggie Smith), mas Jane se interessa é pelo malandro Tom Lefroy (James McAvoy), cuja inteligência e arrogância a provocam.
