Em Manhattan, Joe e Mary, um casal de namorados, vive junto há seis anos. Ele ambiciona ser ator, mas não tem agente, nem currículo e trabalha como garçom. Mary é quem paga a maior parte das contas, trabalhando como maquiadora de uma badalada fotógrafa de modas, Blair. Joe acaba aceitando ter uma participação muito pequena em um vídeo da Madonna, enquanto um amigo, que tem obsessão por loiras naturais e também trabalha com ele como garçom, consegue emprego em uma novela para ganhar 3.600 dólares por semana. Lá, ele se envolve com Kelly, a atriz principal, deixando de lado uma requisitada modelo que é apaixonada por ele. Mas acontecimentos variados vão afetar a vida de todos eles.
