Reconta o agosto de 1945 onde houve o bombardeio nuclear sobre Hiroshima através dos olhos de um número de sobreviventes, incluindo soldados japoneses, cidadãos e prisioneiros de guerra americanos. O filme é parcialmente baseado em Diário de Hiroshima, de Michihiko Hachiya. Ele mostra a angústia de procurar seus entes queridos e o desespero de encontrá-los mortos. Um filme para mostrar que a guerra não deveria ser assim, isto é, atacando pessoas inocentes em vez de ter um exército contra exército de batalha.
