No ano de 1942, Homer Macauley (Alex Neustaedter) tem 14 anos e mora em uma pequena cidade na Califórnia, Ithaca. Enquanto seu irmão (Jack Quaid) está lutando na guerra, ele é o homem da família e cuida da mãe viúva (Meg Ryan), da irmã mais velha (Christine Nelson) e do irmão de 4 anos, Ulysses. Homer trabalha como entregador de telegramas, e ao mesmo tempo que entrega para as pessoas mensagens de amor, esperança e dor, está determinado a ser o mais rápido ciclista mensageiro já visto. Só que uma dessas mensagens vai mudar sua vida para sempre.
