No Dakota do Norte o diretor de um presídio, Sven “Sueco” Sorenson, controla tanto sua casa como a prisão com mão de ferro. Ele executa um condenado que tentou fugir e, quando suas duas filhas Inga (Christin Watson) e Liv (Holly Watson), mentem dizendo que estão grávidas, ele “convoca” os responsáveis, Bud (Charlie Sheen) e Larry (Thomas Harden Church), e os faz casar em tempo recorde. Paralelamente chega à cidade uma agente do F.B.I., Karen Polarski (Mira Sorvino), que por acaso é filha de um corrupto juiz local, Rolf Rausenberg (Donald Sutherland), mas, ao contrário do pai, ela é bem íntegra. Karen quer averiguar a morte do prisioneiro fugitivo, pois há indícios de que foi execução. Enquanto isto Sorenson dá várias tarefas para seus cunhados, deixando-os em um regime de quase escravidão. Sem querer ficar sempre nesta situação, Bud e Larry planejam fugir, mas antes querem roubar um trem que leva um grande carregamento de dinheiro.
