O cruel e sádico coveiro Josefel Zanatas, conhecido como Zé do Caixão, é temido e odiado pelos moradores de uma cidadezinha do interior. Ele é obcecado por gerar o filho perfeito, que possa dar-lhe a continuidade de seu sangue. Mas sua esposa não pode engravidar, e ele acredita que a namorada de seu amigo seja a mulher ideal que procura. Após ser violentada por Zé, a moça jura cometer suicídio para retornar dos mortos e levar a alma daquele que a desgraçou.
