Remake dos filmes de Kurosawa A Saga do Judô e A Saga do Judô II. Um jovem, Sanshiro Sugata, atormentado por problemas pessoais, começa a praticar judô. Seu professor, Shogoro Yano, é um homem devoto que despertou a inimizade dos praticantes locais de jujitsu, o mais antigo e mais aceito dos dois esportes. Sugata usa suas proezas recém-aprendidas para ganhar um pouco de respeito dos outros; no entanto, Shogoro insiste que o esporte tem um lado espiritual, uma lição que Sugata ainda não aprendeu. Por fim, em um combate corpo a corpo com o pai de uma jovem que ele ama, ele passa a entender o verdadeiro significado do judô.
