Em uma cidade costeira na Nova Inglaterra, Helen (Kate Capshaw), a dona de uma livraria, encontra uma carta de amor anônima entre as almofadas do sofá. Helen acredita que a carta é destinada a ela e tenta descobrir quem a escreveu, pensando em vários homens da cidade. Helen inicia um affair com Johnny (Tom Everett Scott), um jovem empregado da livraria, mas acontece que Johnny leu a carta por acaso e pensa que foi Helen quem a escreveu para ele. Mas, ao falar para Helen alguns trechos, faz ela pensar que o autor é Johnny. Paralelamente outras pessoas da cidade lêem a carta e George (Tom Selleck), o bombeiro da cidade e amigo de Helen há muito tempo, está indo para Nova York mas confessa a ela o seu amor. Mas Helen fica realmente surpresa ao saber quem escreveu a carta e para quem, pois tal hipótese era inimaginável.
