Nas frentes soviéticas, Ivan, um garoto órfão de 12 anos, trabalha como espião, podendo atravessar as fronteiras alemãs para coletar informação sem ser visto, e vive sob os cuidados de três oficiais russos. Mas, após inúmeras missões, e com um desgaste físico cada vez maior, os oficiais resolvem poupar Ivan, mandando-o para a escola militar. Ganhador do Leão de Ouro em Veneza.
