Max é um ex-presidiário andarilho que tem economizando dinheiro para abrir um Lava Jato em Pittsburgh. Lionel é um marinheiro sem-teto que está retornando para no Centro-Oeste para conhecer o filho que nasceu enquanto ele estava no mar. Eles formam uma estranha parceria. Max, muito briguento, aprende um pouco com Lionel como lidar com o mundo. Lionel acredita que o espantalho não assusta as aves, pelo contrário, só as diverte. Os pássaros acham os espantalhos muito engraçados. Eles vão da Califórnia até Reno, Denver e para Detroit esperando encontrar uma vida longe das cadeias e das filas de sopa que eles conhecem muito bem.
