Tex Cowley (Woody Allen), um açougueiro judeu, sempre foi apaixonado por Candy (Sharon Stone), sua esposa, mas a mata quando descobre que ela lhe foi infiel várias vezes. Para esconder seu crime, corta o corpo de Candy em alguns pedaços e a enterra perto de El Niño, um pequeno lugarejo no Novo México. Mas Tex perde uma das mãos de Candy e uma cega tropeça nela, indo ao chão. Esta queda, por motivos inexplicáveis, faz a cega ver novamente e, por ser uma mão de mulher, ela atribui o milagre à Virgem. Apesar de Leo Jerome (David Schwimmer), o padre local, não acreditar em milagre, Machado (Cheech Marin), o ambicioso prefeito, vê no acontecimento uma oportunidade de ganhar dinheiro e transforma o lugarejo em um circo. Paralelamente Tex tenta desesperadamente recobrar a mão, antes que Bobo (Kiefer Sutherland), o xerife, a encontre e a use como evidência contra Tex.
