O ex-jogador de futebol e atualmente detetive particular Harry Moseby é contratado para o que parece ser um caso de pessoa desaparecida padrão, por uma envelhecida atriz de Hollywood cujo único papel principal veio graças a ser casada com um magnata do cinema. Ela quer que Moseby encontre e traga de volta a enteada. Harry viaja para a Flórida para encontrá-la, mas começa a ver a conexão da garota fugitiva com o mundo dos dublês de Hollywood, e um mecânico suspeito quando um assassinato não solucionado vem à luz.
