Na pacata Vale das Flores tudo vai bem até que o irmão mais velho de Alberto Maltese é brutalmente assassinado, depois de receber pelo correio uma pequena caixa contendo um escaravelho. O jovem Alberto decide investigar o crime e ajudar o veterano delegado Pimentel a prender o culpado. Logo em seguida, outra vítima recebe o mesmo presente macabro e é assassinada. Trata-se de um assassino em série que escolhe suas vítimas por uma características muito específica: todas são ruivas legítimas e todas, antes de morrer, recebem o escaravelho. Itos é tudo que Alberto e Pimentel têm, mas quando não há suspeitos, cada pista é crucial.
