Cyd Scaborough (Nevin), uma professora de dança, que está finalizando os detalhes de seu casamento, perde sua adoentada mãe. Para piorar ainda mais sua agonia, um especulador imobiliário oferece uma bela quantia para comprar o estúdio de dança que tem sido da família há várias gerações. Com a possibilidade da venda, Cyd vislumbra uma chance de se tornar uma terapeuta. Tudo muda quando ela recebe a chocante notícia de que Tanner Grey (Schneider), o pai que ela nunca conheceu, está vivo e é dono do estúdio de dança da família. Ela pede para sua advogada, Laura Williams (Downey) para que negocie a venda do estúdio o mais rápido possível, porém, Tanner não está com pressa para entregar a escritura.
