O conde Danilo, um boa vida, fica viúvo na noite de núpcias, da maior acionista do Banco Real de Momóvia, a condessa Pompeia. Por gastar exageradamente a herança, o rei Anatolief manda uma representação diplomática ao Rio de Janeiro para convencê-lo a ser mais parcimonioso enquanto o visconde Cascata e o tenente Rataplan planejam uma trama diabólica contra o herdeiro que, a esta altura, promove um grande baile em sua mansão durante o carnaval. O rei, que detestava violência, aceita o golpe contra Danilo. A partir deste momento, a trama aumenta as situações confusas e hilariantes. (Cinemateca Brasileira)
