Emmett é um jovem policial que, de repente, se descobre portador de uma grave doença em fase terminal. Atordoado, ele aceita a estranha proposta de um ex-policial que conhece por acaso. A proposta é a seguinte: Emmett aproveita o pouco tempo de vida que lhe resta da melhor forma que puder e, depois de alguns dias, sem hora ou local determinado, o ex-policial o matará. Tudo muito limpo, sem preocupações, sem sofrimento. Ocorre que, durante esse período, Emmett descobre que tudo não passou de um terrível engano médico e que sua saúde está absolutamente em dia. Exceto por um detalhe: um estranho que Emmett não sabe quem é nem onde encontrar está prestes a matá-lo. Numa corrida desesperada contra o tempo, agora Emmett precisa encontrar o matador de aluguel antes de ser encontrado e morto por ele.
