Aos 80 anos, Claude Lherminier já não é mais o grande industrial de antigamente. Aposentado, ele sofre com a perda de memória, e não consegue viver sem a ajuda de enfermeiras. Mesmo assim, insiste em morar sozinho, afugentando todos que tentam ajudá-lo. A filha Carole não quer colocá-lo num asilo, mas se preocupa com as manias e obsessões do pai. Em especial, Claude não para de falar na visita da outra filha, Alice, que não vem vê-lo há quase dez anos.
