Brasil, não muito longe do Rio de Janeiro ... Numa pobre vila de pescadores cercada pelas montanhas da Baía de Guanabara, dois primos, Marcos e Jerônimo, produzem pêssegos milagrosos graças ao arrastão, sua grande rede de pesca . Marcos ama e é amado por Emaisa, sobrinha do proprietário do local que estabelece a lei e os preços. Um criado preto, apaixonado por Emaisa, obtém de uma bruxa uma poção de amor que ele deve derramar em seu copo e no de Emaisa. Mas é Jerônimo quem bebe em vez do criado.
