Dashrath Manjhi era um homem pobre da mais baixa das castas, vivendo em uma vila remota isolada do mundo por uma cordilheira rochosa. A vida para ele era uma luta diária pela sobrevivência. Ele amava sua esposa, Phaguniya, além da crença. Um dia, enquanto subia a montanha para lhe trazer comida, sua esposa escorregou, caiu e morreu. Oprimido pela dor, Dashrath decidiu abrir um caminho através da montanha, para que ninguém mais sofresse o seu destino. Por 22 anos, sozinho, com apenas um martelo e um cinzel, ele martelou as rochas, até que o caminho foi escavado na montanha.
