Weldon Penderton (Marlon Brando) é um major que vê sua carreira em franca decadência após o término da 2ª Guerra Mundial, além de ter que esconder sua homossexualidade a sete chaves. Seus problemas na carreira terminam influenciando também seu casamento com Leonora (Elizabeth Taylor), que vive traindo o marido. Essa crise no casamento é acompanhada atentamente por um casal de vizinhos e por um recruta que nutre uma paixão platônica por sua esposa. Ao descobrir que ela mantém um caso com este jovem recruta, o major Penderton fica furioso.
