1980. Beth Easton (Christina Ricci) é uma jovem de Los Angeles que se muda com sua mãe, Kate (Polly Draper), que recentemente ficou viúva, para uma casa no interior do país que Kate recebeu como herança de uma tia. Elas planejam lá recomeçar suas vidas, ou pelo menos tentar. Inicialmente Beth odeia viver no campo, mas então ela conhece a franca e desafiadora Jody Salerno (Anna Schlumsky). Rapidamente elas se tornam amigas, apesar de Jody e sua mãe, Lynette (Diana Scarwid), serem marginalizadas na região. Jody tem uma má reputação e tem de lidar com a vergonha de ter uma mãe alcoólatra. Beth e Jody têm algumas coisas em comum e uma delas é um espírito aventureiro, que as faz explorar as misteriosas cavernas da Montanha do Urso, pois há uma história que em uma das cavernas há uma fortuna em ouro, esperando para ser encontrada.
