James (Ethan Peck), aos 27 anos, abandona sua carreira de direito em busca de seu sonho de infância, tornar-se ator. Enquanto estuda artes cênicas sob orientação de Shelley (Marcia Gay Harden), ele acaba envolvido na peça de Carlo Lucchesi, Tinto de Verano, que se passa na Espanha. A namorada de James, Brit (Kelsey Chow) deixa-o e ele, espontaneamente, viaja para a Espanha, onde encontra o solitário escritor da peça, Lucchesi (Bob E. Wells), em uma livraria de Barcelona. Lucchesi está em um relacionamento com uma mulher bem mais nova, Veronica (Elsa Pataky), mas ainda nutre um velho amor por sua musa, há muitos anos perdida, Eliza (Sonia Braga), uma romancista que, por acaso, está visitando seu filho Nico (Nicholas Dominic Talvola), um trompetista que também mora em Barcelona. Com uma dourada Espanha em pano de fundo, estes personagens têm seus destinos cruzados.
