Trata-se de uma história de amor passada em uma época de guerras, desbravações e conquistas no século XVIII. Este épico tem como protagonista o primeiro-ministro do imperador, chamado Bajirao. Um grande guerreiro de espadas flexíveis que expandiu o imperio Maratha entre 1720 e 1740. Além de mostrar sua atuação como líder de seu exército, o filme foca, principalmente, em seu romance com sua segunda esposa, a muçulmana Mastani, filha do rei de Bundelkhand. O problema é que Bajirao já é casado com uma bela hindu, Kashi.
