Subterrâneos do Futebol é um documentário que procura captar a vida do jogador, desde menino nos campos de pelada, até o fim da sua carreira, sempre efêmera. Até então o cinema brasileiro ainda não tinha passado a visão real e cruel da trajetória do jogador como coisa efêmera. O filme pretende contrapor a ilusão da fama à incompatível condição para sobreviver depois dela. A estrutura narrativa é baseada em três personagens; o juvenil do Palmeiras Feijão (Luiz Carlos de Freitas) que tinha feito o papel de Pelé no filme O Rei Pelé, de Hugo Christensen, o próprio Pelé e Zózimo Calazans, bicampeão mundial em decadência. Eram três negros; o aspirante, o ídolo e o caído.
